Sleep apnea in kids is a major problem in any family and a matter of attention in medical community. It can be known after diagnosis; it says that 12 percent kids snore and 10 percent kids suffer obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Generally, both children as well as adults have obstructive sleep apnea; in case of children the disorder of breathing is different than adults; sometimes symptoms, diagnosis along with treatment may vary. In case of kids, the symptom is subtle than adults with less distinguishing and loud snoring; for their diagnosis awareness to OSAS characteristics is very important.
Like adults, sleep apnea in kids is classified into three categories: one is obstructive; another is central; and last one is mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in kids. It has many similarities at end.
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea in kids
Symptoms of OSA in kids are usually different from the adults. But, loud snoring can be seen, there may be louder breathing and mouth breathing. Restless sleep is normal and wanted to everyone. When restful sleep is disturbed, daytime sleepiness may be widespread. One study says that, 50 kids with OSAS observed that in 86% of cases, stage 3 NREM sleep is absent. It is not a matter of wonder and they may be tired in nest day. Learning deficits, personality changes including the hyperactivity as well as anti-social behavior are the signs of OSA in kids. Sometimes, sleep walking, frequent nightmares, and bed-wetting are considered as a sign of OSA.
Clinically, there are some unique symptoms of OSA in kids. Really, sound sleep is essential for normal growth along with development. Underweight of the kids are remarkable in case of OSAS. Enlargement of the tonsils as well as adenoids obstruct airway and then infection of upper respiratory is common. Hypertension in addition to acute cardiac symptoms may be observed.
Reasons of Sleep Apnea in Kids
Enlarged adenoids as well as tonsils are the main cause of sleep apnea in kids. Due to excess tissue in airways is one cause of OSAS in kids; whatever the reason, OSAS is mainly occurred due to enlargement of adenoids as well as tonsils because it obstructs the airways. Sometimes, tonsils and adenoids are large compared to size of the airways of kids; it partially blocks breathing passage.Medical science tells the enlargement of adenoids as well as tonsils obstruct the breathing passage, but polysomnography test is more effective to indentify the OSA in children and adults.Kids with OSA suffer obstruction of airways, but polysomnography test will show less true apnea; in case of excess hypopnea, respiratory disturbance index (RDI) score will high and restless leg movements indicate the less severe disturbances of respiratory.
Treatment for Sleep Disorder in kids
Surgery is another option to overcome the OSA in kids. When cpap machines or continuous airway pressure are seen to treat the sleep apnea, kids may face problem or can't tolerate it. So surgery is more effective for this situation. Surgery to remove adenoids and tonsils are known as adenotonsillectomy, it is well liked to young people. Removal of adenoids and tonsils in kids are performed to clear the air passage, but not to treat the sore throats. Adenotonsillectomy is the best option to reduce and overcome the sleep apnea in kids.Cardiac and pulmonary failure, poor cognitive and physical growth, as well as overall poor health are seen due to OSA in kids. Young children may stay at risk. OSAS can have an effect on the health as well as life of kids. Sleep Better At Night...
The Sunset Dimmer is the Only Product on the Market that Help You Fall Asleep Gradually & Naturally.
But don't take our word for it. Here is only one Testimonial... "I've been using the Sunset Dimmer in my 7 month old daughter's room for a couple of weeks now. Our pediatrician told us early on how important a regular bedtime routine is when establishing sleep habits with an infant. The 30 minutes of light that the Sunset Dimmer provides is a perfect compliment to that routine. As we change her into pajamas, read a couple of stories, and quietly wind down from the day's activities, the light in her room is slowly and steadily dimming. It is very subtle, but incredibly calming and relaxing. By the time I lay her down in the crib it is almost completely dark and she usually will drift right off to sleep. And, most of the time, I feel ready to do the same! I love my Sunset Dimmer and am going to suggest it to families that have children with sleep issues" Elyssa - Cupertino, CA |
